Sustaining the Flame

Turn your eyes upon Jesus,
Look full in His wonderful face,
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim,
In the light of His glory and grace.

Every Sunday, when we hear God's words, we often feel the effects igniting a flame within us, to maybe make some major changes in our relationship with God. We become so pumped & worked up to live a better life for God.

Then as the business of life resumes on Monday, the early wake up, the piles of work throughout the day, we become caught in the rough seas of life. We get tossed around, battered, shaken to our core & almost just like that - we are once again trapped in the cycle of life.
All the inspiration, the desired resolutions, the accepted challenges, new commitments, the need to live a better life for God just dissipates.

It's depressing to look back.
To remember how motivated we were to make a change. It felt so real, we were so convinced we were going to do something better this time around. But week after week, we realize that 'life just happens'.
Where did all the motivation go? The awesome desires to live a better life for Him? Just completely down the drain?

What happened to the fire that was once burning so brightly?

We quite often lose our focus.
We get so caught up in living life once the weekends are over.
In trying to get the best grades we can, to impress our boss or our friends, to get homework done so we don't get into trouble. We get completely sidetracked, completely distracted.
Lately, when I lose my focus, I find the lyrics to the hymn 'Turn your eyes upon Jesus' resounding within me.

It snaps me back into focus.
Life isn't all about our grades, our job, our workload, or our relationships with others. It's purely about our relationship with Him. It's living with Him & for Him.

It's giving Him control of our daily turmoil, in doing our best in whatever comes our way & acknowledging that all our accomplishments come from Him. Through this, we can truly rejoice in all the hard work we do as we see His unending providence in our lives. It's us having a clear view of the cross in all we do.

It's also about making effort to share His love with others because of the joy He has given us. No matter how hard people may be on us, how stirred up our emotions may be, once we truly constantly turn our eyes on Jesus, then we can learn to love no matter what comes our way. Not only will it resolve problems, but it'll make us feel great, it'll help us to remember what really matters.

God's words can be generally quite implicit.
We may be challenged greatly to live better for Him, but alot of the time, it's only a little urge which bounces right off us. It doesn't sink into us, it doesn't digest.

Instead of just resuming with life after the service on Sunday, take some time to reflect on God's words & how it really applies in your life right now. Ask God in prayer for what He wants you to do with your life. Let His words truly sink into you & solidify as you spend some time reflecting & merging His desires into your life.

As God ignites His fire in us each week, I hope that we may all remember that the hardships, challenges, busyness IS our challenge - they are what God has pumped us up for. They are all another unending opportunity for us to do something better & more desirable for Him. It is God's given chance for us to practice living for Him & to experience more of His grace.
This is our challenge.

Until next time,
Godbless~
